Our Process
Ripping and Cutting Boards
The first order of business is to ensure that we have the right measurements for our projects. The old saying, "Measure twice, cut once" is certainly the rule of thumb with Pair of Allaire!
We use a variety of saws to help us get the boards to the right length and provide added detailing by cutting at an angle for some designs.
Jointing and Planing Boards
jointers and planers are a great way to ensure the boards have a straight edge and that they are level.
If we are ripping boards on the table saw, we want to ensure we start with a straight edge. The jointer will shave off the thinnest amount of the board to provide a straight edge.
We also use the planer to level the boards after glue up. The provides a smooth surface to begin sanding.
Bonding Boards
Glue up can be overlooked for importance in a process, but it can make or break a project. We love wood glue, and we use lots of it! Ensuring that the cure time is achieved to produce the strongest bond, making sure your board will last.
Another technique that we use is adding dominoes or dowel rods to larger pieces. Dominoes and dowels allow the natural expansion and compression of wood to occur without warping or cracking it.
Sanding and Routing Boards
Sanding is essential for so many reasons, including splinters! We take sanding pretty serious. We use various grits of sand paper, no less than 3, to provide a silky smooth surface. Low grit (80) sand papers will take off the rough edges of a project, but using higher grits (320 or more) can provide a food grade surface.
We love to route our boards. Whether it is to add a simple rounded edge to a cutting board, add a juice tray rim, or add fun details like an inlay, we have fun with the routers!Â
Finishing Touches
Nothing is more satisfying than applying stains, lacquer, mineral oils, etc. to a completed project. That is when you really get to see the beauty of the product. All of our boards are food safe!
We provide many different options for finishing touches. A few include:
Handles
Laser engraving or cutting
Wood burning
Vinyl (Permanent and iron on (HTV))
Bows
Beads
We love when our friends come to hang out in the shop with us!
